Tony Bennett's show was wonderful. The flow and pace of it was perfection. The quartet backing him was outstanding. His daughter, Antonia, sang like a bird as an opener and duetted with him later in his set.
His singing was steller. His ability to turn a phrase, inflect a word, accent a tone to bring out the music was amazing. He keeps it fresh even on these older pieces. He enjoyed the songs like he was singing them for the first time, therefore we did too. If you had a favorite song, he sang it last night.
I took an old pal of mine who leads a jazz quartet himself, and he loved the show. My wife asked him if he gleened anything from the show and he said absolutely. Tony is the master!
The audience gave him several standing O's during the show and would not let him off the hook at the end. He ALMOST did a "third" encore. They were still clapping long into the band striking the set. People in Richmond don't get out much. Just kidding!! Truth is, Tony was that good.
If he were playing here again tonight, I would be there.
