Claire Cottrill (born August 18, 1998), also known as Clairo, is an electropop recording artist from Carlisle, Massachusetts.
Clairo started posting music to Bandcamp while in high school before beginning to post covers and songs in addition to DJ mixes of rap music on Soundcloud under the name Clairo/DJ Baby Benz.. She also maintained a YouTube channel where she would post covers and short films. She first drew broad attention in 2017 when the video for her song "Pretty Girl" went viral on YouTube. Her debut EP, diary 001 was released on May 25, 2018 on FADER Label.
Clairo grew up in Carlisle, Massachusetts. In 2017 she started attending Syracuse University.. On May 29th, 2018 she publicly came out as bisexual on Twitter.
Clairo is the daughter of Geoff Cottrill, a marketing executive who has worked at Converse, Starbucks, and The Coca-Cola Company. Due to her father's connections and her viral status, Clairo has been controversially accused of being an "industry plant" (a pejorative term to describe artists who have backing from the music industry to advance their careers, but is presented as a independent start-up), which she denies.
