Momo (Momoko Kawabata) is a singer songwriter known for her passionate piano style, occasionally accompanied by the support of violins and a band. She was born and raised in Chiba, the neighbourly prefecture of Tokyo without much influence from any friends, family or the music industry over there. She self-taught herself how to write songs, how to sing and how to play the piano, mostly relying on her ears and so Momo's unique playing style is highly influenced by this. Although she is often described as the Japanese Kate Bush or Ben Folds, she is into guitar music and live bands such as Elliott Smith, Deerhunter, Modest Mouse and so on rather than shiny piano pop music.
Momo has released 3 free demos and 1 mini album and performed at various music venues, cafes, shopping centres and on the streets around Tokyo from 2005 to 2009 with her actual name "Momoko Kawabata". Dropping her music career, she moved to England alone to get free from the great expectation for Japanese pop music to be well-packaged products and a lot of self-consciousness. She recorded 3 songs at the end of the time in London in 2011 and after two-year silence she recorded her first full album "Safe In The Dark" almost spontaneously to get back to the music circuit.
