Jane Lee Hooker Biography

Jane Lee Hooker is a band of five women from New York City who play rock n roll covers of traditional blues songs.

These women are by no means new to the game. Between the five of them, they have approximately 100 years of experience touring both nationally and internationally, recording, and songwriting. No joke. Individually, the members of Jane Lee Hooker have played for thousands of fans while sharing bills with the likes of Motorhead, MC5, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Deep Purple, among others. And they've played more club gigs in more cities than even they can believe. So how'd this gang of pros finally find each other?

The idea for the band came about a year ago. Tracy (ex Nashville Pussy) and Tina (ex Bad Wizard) used to play together in Helldorado in the 90s. After their gigs with their previous bands ended, both women took time off. That didn't sit well with them. What they really missed was playing dual lead guitar with each other, trading solos, and leaving audiences howling with disbelief at what they had just witnessed. There had to be one last heist in the name of rock n roll. Enter Mary, who played bass with Tracy in NYC in the late 80s/early 90s punk band the Wives. Melissa plays drums for three other bands and was chosen for Jane Lee Hooker even before she finished playing the first song of her audition. And in a city full of singers who think they can cut it, Jess was the one who actually delivered.

"The best part of this band is the chemistry among all of us," says Jess. "I feel privileged to work with women that are supportive, extremely talented, and very sure of themselves—that's hard to find."

Indeed. These women do not mess around. Jane Lee Hooker is not a sloppy bar band doing god-awful karaoke covers of the Stones and Led Zeppelin. They're bringing audiences back to the very first church of rock n roll, and the number of believers keeps growing.

"In such little time, we've generated faithful followers," says Jess. "To them it seems unbelievable how well we can pull off these standard blues tunes and make them sound original and so rock n roll."

Among the band's calling cards are songs by Muddy Waters, Ray Charles, Howlin Wolf, Johnny Winter, and, of course, John Lee Hooker—all fed through double lead guitars, a heavy-bottom rhythm section, and soul-scouring vocals. This is five women's way of paying proper respect to the music that changed their lives, and, you know, the entire world.
