Ben Kweller Biography

In 2009, Ben Kweller moved back to Texas after 10 years in New York City. To welcome himself home, he made a fantastic country record that released a voice he'd been hearing in his head since his earliest days growing up in Greenville, TX. After circling the globe for two years in support of Changing Horses, Kweller was ready to go electric again, and the songs began to flow quickly. Go Fly A Kite is Kweller's fifth studio album, and a triumphant debut for his Austin-based label, The Noise Company. The album hits hard with the unforgettably melodic and heartwarming fuzzed-out sound that first put him on the map with his debut in 2002. With Go Fly A Kite, Kweller proves that he has evolved yet managed to maintain the deft songwriting sensibility and diversity for which he is known and loved.

Ben Kweller was born in San Francisco, CA, on June 16th, 1981. Shortly after his birth, his family relocated to Texas where he began writing songs at the tender age of 9. Kweller, now 30, is one of the nation's most treasured songwriters and performers. His genre-jumping blend of alt rock, piano ballads and folk music has captured the hearts of fans and critics alike, and has allowed him to craft a catalog that has sold over half a million copies worldwide.

Kweller's teenage grunge group, Radish, scored a top 40 UK hit in 1996 that gave the band a cult following in the UK and Europe. When Radish broke up in 1999, Kweller packed his bags and headed to New York City. His newfound urban landscape and atypical lifestyle gave birth to an authentic and autobiographical style of writing that Kweller still mines to this day, and the talents of the 18-year-old didn't go without notice, as the likes of Evan Dando, Jeff Tweedy, Juliana Hatfield and The Violent Femmes' Gordon Gano each took him under their wings and out on tour. The education and support he received proved invaluable as the spontaneous and raw solo performances of those early days became the building blocks for his illustrious career. Kweller became a staple in the New York music scene of the early 2000's, touring and playing with his local peers, such as The Strokes, Adam Green, Moldy Peaches, Nada Surf, Fountains of Wayne, Guster and Jeffrey Lewis. In addition, Kweller shared the stage with Kings Of Leon, Flaming Lips, My Morning Jacket, Bright Eyes, Death Cab for Cutie and Ryan Adams.

From the first crashing cymbal and dynamic electric riff of "Mean To Me," to the closing upbeat declaration of "You Can Count On Me," Go Fly A Kite encompasses all the many facets and talents of Ben Kweller. The songwriting on tracks like "Free" and "Full Circle" is relevant and reflective and has the ability to both provoke profound thought and incite heavenly daydreams, as you get lost in his unique delivery and pop-driven melodies. Parallel to the journey he has taken, the new album presents a Ben Kweller that has truly come "Full Circle." Immersed in rich harmonies, lush arrangements and bittersweet lyrics, Go Fly A Kite is a celebratory offering of the essential Ben Kweller and serves as a career-defining album with the ability to resonate beyond its time.
